Green Lanes
Hedged or walled tracks in the countryside are often informally
referred to as 'green lanes'. A particular green lane may be
classed as a public right of way (ie: footpath, bridleway, 'road
used as a public footpath' or byway), a public road or it may be
entirely private. An Ordnance Survey map will give you an
indication of its status.
The Public Rights of Way Unit, in
the Council's Rural & Recreation Service, is responsible for
maintaining those green lanes which are public rights of way. Green
lanes which are unsealed (ie: not surfaced) public roads are our
responsibility and unsealed (ie: not surfaced) private roads are
the responsibility of the landowner.
