Making Choices

Have you ever thought what would happen to you if you lost the
mental capacity to make decisions for yourself? Would you like to
take more control of your care in the future if this happens? The
"Making Choices" section outlines and explains ways in which you
can do this.
It is an unfortunate fact that you may reach a point in your
life when you longer have the mental capacity to make your own
decisions - perhaps because of dementia, stroke or some other
condition - and decisions will therefore have to be made for you by
somebody else. Under the Mental Capacity Act
2005, this somebody else will be a health or social care
professional in consultation with your loved ones and other people
involved in your care.
However, this does not have to be the case as the Mental
Capacity Act also gives you the power to plan ahead for your care
in the future with either an Advanced
Decision to Refuse Treatment or by granting someone of your
choosing Lasting Power of
Attorney (follow the links for more information).
It's your life and your care. Take control of it.
