What was this award?
The Golden Apple Award Scheme recognised businesses in the food
service sector which make it easier for children to choose
healthier meals when dining out.
Eating out has become an increasing part of people’s lives, so
by achieving the standards of the Golden Apple Award businesses can
play a part in helping to improve children’s health in the
authority.
What are the aims and goals of the award?
The Team aimed to work with food service outlets to promote
healthy eating out and make it easier for the public to know where
to go for healthier food when taking children out to eat and
play.
The award had two main goals:
- To make the food on offer for children generally healthier by
making broad changes to how food is prepared and served.
- To help parents and children make informed choices about food
by identifying healthier foods.
Who runs the award?
The Health Improvement and Environmental Health Team at the
Council. These two departments worked in partnership towards
the Council’s aim of improving the well-being of our residents.
They have designed, managed and administered the scheme.
Who can apply?
The award was open to all commercial premises that provided food
for young children, irrespective of size of facility or number of
customers. This included cafes, public houses, sandwich bars,
restaurants, play centres, activity centres, working farms and any
other commercial premises that serves food to children.
