About The Project
The project is based in St. John’s Wood Community
Centre, on the Longridge estate in Knutsford, but has expanded to
cover much of Cheshire East, either working alone or in partnership
with other organisations and community groups.
The project wishes to encourage people to take regular exercise
and make healthier food choices. It hopes to empower communities to
take ownership of their continued health and well-being. It also
aims to encourage local people to take part in physically growing
their own food.
The project is open to all age groups from babies to the elderly
but specifically targets people who may feel isolated, be on
benefits, are out of work, have mental health problems,
disabilities or are suffering from abuse.
Healthy Eating
One of the project’s main focuses is on increasing cooking
skills and raising awareness of food; including the production of
food, food safety and healthy eating. The project runs regular
cookery workshops and other food related healthy eating
activities.
Allotments and Food Growing
The project has developed small allotments working with local
schools and the wider community. Help and advice is given to
individuals who wish to grow their own fruit and vegetables.
Regular seed planting and growing activities are held throughout
the year, as well as, allotment workshops.
Opportunities are also available to help on community
allotments.
Exercise
More
recently the project has developed a wide programme of exercise
activities including: Zumba for over 50’s, Buggy Walks, Health
Walks and Street Dance sessions to name a few. Nordic Walking will
also feature in the programme soon.
Bespoke Activities & Working In Partnership
We also are extremely keen to work in partnership with other
organisations and community groups and can develop bespoke
activities to suit. Some examples of past activities are: providing
healthy eating workshops for housing groups, developing children’s
gardening clubs in schools, running children’s holiday cookery
clubs with faith organisations, running weaning workshops for Sure
Start Children’s Centres etc.
