May 2012 Ranger Events

The Rangers run a large number of varied and interesting events across Cheshire East throughout the year. Adult and child (4-17 years old) charges are shown for each event. Children under 4 are free.

Tuesday, May 1

Navigation course for walkers – Evening 3 (Crewe)

Bookable event: Moorland Adventure working with the Countryside Ranger Service present a navigation course for everyone who walks in the countryside. Participants can even gain a qualification if they wish or just book on one event for a taster. The course is being run in parallel in 2 locations.

Evening 3 - On this evening navigation course we will be practicing taking grid references, reviewing our map reading skills and practicing our map and compass work outside.

Marie Curie Spring Walk

Bookable event: A lovely 13.65km (8.5 mile) through glorious Cheshire countryside just outside Nantwich. This walk is in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. Local representatives of the charity will be taking part and voluntary donations will be very welcome at the end of the walk. Booking essential.

Haslington Circular Walk

Join us on the Haslington circular walk of around 6 km (4 miles) with a chance to see some of the work carried out by the local conservation volunteers plus learn some interesting local history facts.

Canals, Ways and Edges

Bookable event: A 7 mile circular walk enjoying the sites of the Macclesfield Canal, the Biddulph Valley Way and Congleton Edge followed by a pub lunch for those who need refuelling. Booking essential.

RSPB - Dawn Chorus at the Brickworks

A short early morning walk around Jacksons’ Brickworks to listen and learn about bird song. Suitable for beginners.

Geocaching at Tegg's Nose

Bookable event: Ever wanted to find out more about the global treasure hunting game that is Geocaching? Bring your GPS up to Tegg’s Nose Country Park and join the Ranger Service and GOING AWOL on this fun afternoon of Geocaching. Booking and payment in advance is essential. Cost £3.

Romany Open Day

Better known as Romany to his many “Children's Hour” listeners in the 1930s and 1940s, the Reverend George Bramwell Evens was the first media naturalist to fire the imagination of a generation. These open days are your chance to visit his caravan and learn a little more about his life and times, with the help of the Rangers and members of the Romany Society, through storytelling and displays. The caravan is situated in the Romany Memorial Gardens, South Drive, Wilmslow.

Tegg's Nose Star Party

If you've ever looked up at the starry night sky and been enthralled by what you've seen, join us for an evening of star gazing (weather permitting), talks and computer demonstrations. Come and enjoy the night sky whilst we help you understand its beauty.

Come and Try It Day

Bookable event: Another chance to try a number of exciting and varied activities at Tegg's Nose Country Park.  There will 5 different activities taking place, Climbing, Abseiling, Bushcraft Skills, Archery and Orienteering. Partnership event with Moorland Adventure. Minimum age for Abseiling is 6. Booking and payment in advance is essential. Cost £4 per person or Family of 4 for £12.

Evening 4 - This session will include learning about route planning, route cards, kit and emergency procedures, aiming off, attack points  and collecting features The evening will also plan a full day’s walking  route for the session on May 20th.

Charity Walk - Jen Greene Galaxy Tribute Fund at Climb

Bookable event: Enjoy a walk around Acton using the canal towpaths and public footpaths. The walk can be split into two half walks so you can join us for the morning or the afternoon or do both walks, each walk is just over 5 miles long.  Local representatives of the charity will be taking part and voluntary donations will be very welcome at the end of your walk.

The Jen Greene Galaxy Tribute Fund at Climb is based in Crewe, to help all families, children, young people and professionals associated with metabolic diseases. Booking essential.

Full day session - A full day out hill walking following the prepared route and practicing map reading skills as well as having a very enjoyable walk.

Carrs Balsam Bash

A chance to lend a hand at the Carrs in Wilmslow. Come and help the Friends of the Carrs to remove the fast growing, explosive, invasive weed 'Himalayan Balsam' from the banks of the River Bollin. All tools provided but please remember your wellies! A repeat event will take place on June 24th.

May Bridgend Centre Walk

A circular walk from the Bridgend Centre, Bollington. Refreshments are provided at the end of the walk. The routes take in points of interest relating to the varied wildlife and history of the area. There is a charge of £2 for adults/£1 for children. The walking is easy, mostly flat.

Down the Bollin

Bookable event: A 7km (5 mile) walk from Macclesfield’s Riverside Park following the River Bollin downstream as far as Prestbury and returning above the valley on the Tytherington side. Featuring Bronze Age earth works, Saxon crosses, mediaeval church, a timber framed hall and English Longhorn Cattle. Booking essential.

Kerridge Ramble

Make the most of the long evenings on a 6km (4 mile) ramble around the countryside of Kerridge, looking at its history and wildlife and exploring its hidden pathways.  The views from Kerridge Ridge can be fantastic at this time of year.

Mossland Magic

Bookable event: A walk of approximately 5km (3.5 miles) miles looking at the fascinating natural history of this remnant peatland wilderness. Includes visits to Lindow Common and Lindow Moss. The walking is slow  and mostly flat, but surfaces may be muddy. Booking and payment in advance is essential. Adults £3, Children £2.
