About Nelson Pit Visitor Centre
Nelson Pit Visitor Centre in Higher Poynton provides an
excellent rest point for those of you keen to explore the
Middlewood Way and its surrounding countryside.
The centre has a large informative display about the history of
the local area and specifically the origins of the Middlewood Way
and the local canal network. Come and connect to the past at
this free to enter centre which also offers 8 circular walks
of varying grades around the local area which can be downloaded
from our Free Walk Leaflets web page.
The centre also acts as a local information point for the
Rangers and many other local attractions. Pick up a leaflet and
find out about the many different attractions and visitor
experiences in the Macclesfield and North West area while also
finding out what the Rangers are doing throughout the year.
The Nelson Pit Visitor Centre was built on the site of a former
colliery with the assistance of a Heritage Lottery Fund grant, and
opened in spring 1999.
The centre provides information and toilet facilities for
visitors to the Middlewood Way, the Macclesfield Canal, and the
surrounding countryside. There are displays on local history and
wildlife topics as well as activities for children.
