Session Hints and Tips
The information on this page contains hints and tips for running
a successful session, as well as outlining the key objectives and
benefits of running a session.
Objectives of the Sessions
- To bring the pleasure of books and reading to people, some of
whom may no longer be able to read for themselves
- To provide a mentally stimulating group activity
- To encourage people to respond to books and poetry
- To encourage people to share thoughts, feelings and
memories
Benefits of the sessions

or not they are able to read themselves
- Help people get to know each other and discover things they
have in common
- Help to break down barriers between clients and between staff
and clients
- Provide an opportunity for people to talk about things that are
important to them, which they may not have at any other time
- Help build self-confidence and improve self-esteem
- People feel valued because they are listened to
Some Tips for Running a Reading/Reminiscence Group
- Find a quiet room or corner
- Don’t sit with your back to a window - it’s harder for people
to see your face
- Smaller groups are better (10 is probably the maximum so all
can hear)
- Introduce each reading or poem and explain why it has been
chosen
- Read slowly and clearly
- Repeat your questions so that everyone understands
- Encourage those who want to, to contribute
- Try to avoid allowing one or two people to dominate
- Listen.
- You don’t have to stick to the session plan
- Relax and enjoy it!
- Provide copies of the poems for people to re-read and take
home
