Stars of the Future

Cheshire East Council’s Leisure Development Team recognise the importance of supporting local talented sports people to enable them to reach sporting excellence.

In partnership with Manchester Metropolitan University Cheshire, IQ Therapies, Cheshire East SGO's.  The Athlete Performance Academy is designed to support individuals who are training and competing in sport at regional, national and international level.

Athlete Profiles

Each athlete accepted onto the Athlete Performance Academy is asked to create an Athlete Profile. This profile is to help advertise all the hard work & achievements athletes gain through training and competitions. Learn more through the current athlete profiles.

The programme was formally launched at a reception at Municipal Buildings by Cheshire East Mayor Margaret Simon, Councillor Andrew Knowles Cabinet Minister for Health and Wellbeing and Peter Lee for Manchester Metropolitan University in December 2009.

The Athlete Performance Academy was re-launched in October 2011 at Manchester Metropolitan University and Wilmslow High School by The Worshipful Mayor of Cheshire East and Paralympic Athletes Adrian Derbyshire & Colin Lynch.

What support is available?

This programme aims to draw on the resources and capabilities of Cheshire East Council, Manchester Metropolitan University & IQ Therapies  have available to support out athletes.

  • Cheshire East Council Leisure Facilities Team offers FREE Leisure Facilities Card which athletes can use to access Local Authority Leisure Facilities within the boundaries of CheshireAthlete at a training camp East. Athletes will be able to access Swimming, Gym, fitness classes and more dependent on the facility.
  •  The APA offers all athlete members the opportunity to attend workshops delivered by specialists from the sports & fitness industry. Topics include; Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Fitness Testing, Core Stability.  2013/14 programme to follow soon.
  • Manchester Metropolitan University is regarded as one of the most successful departments in its field within the UK. Over 75% of their research is rated as World Class and the university offers athletes the support of World Class Performance Programmes that are based with the department. They also host 3 Athlete Development Evening per year.
  • IQ Therapies have clinics based in Alsager and Wilmslow supporting the APA.  Services range from Physiotherapy, Osteopathy, Podiatry as well as Health and Fitness for a more holistic approach to therapies.  There are discounted rates for members of the APA.  Follow the link for more information.
  • Sports Partnership; supports young athletes, up skills and offer practical support to the life of a young athlete providing valuable school/club links.

    Who can apply?

  1. Reside within the borders of Cheshire East Council Individuals who reside outside the boundaries but are current members of a club within Cheshire East may apply and their application will be considered.
  2. Are training or competing at regional level or above (Regional standard of training or competing is defined by sport specific National Governing Body  ( NGB ) i.e. this may be North West or North. Individuals will have to produce formal confirmation from sporting NGB.

If an individual believes they are training or competing at this level but may not have formal evidence then they are welcome to express their interest in the programme and will be contacted to discuss in more detail.
