Congleton Accident Prevention
Service

Small repairs and practical tasks to
help older people remain living safely in their own home
The Accident Prevention Service is
part of Congleton Care & Repair, for people over the age of 60
living in the former district of Congleton.
Similar services are
available from Anchor Staying Put - Crewe & Nantwich
and Macclesfield Care & Repair.
People who have used our service in
the past have told us that the service is valuable to them
because:
- They can't do the jobs themselves any
more
- They don't have family nearby who can
do the jobs for them
- Finding a contractor is difficult and
they don't know who to trust
- They can't afford the prices that
contractors often want to charge for small jobs
What does the service offer?
- Home safety checks - advice about
small improvements you can make to prevent falls and other
accidents in the home
- Small repairs including joinery,
plumbing and glazing
- Jobs to prevent trips and slips, such
as fixing down rugs and carpets, fixing trailing wires, or cleaning
slippery paths
- Home security, including changing
locks and fitting door chains
- Minor adaptations, such as grab rails
and extra hand rails on the stairs
- Practical tasks such as changing
curtains, or replacing light bulbs
There are some jobs we can't do, such
as electrical work, work at height, and gardening or
decorating.
What does the service cost?
It is a low cost service, costing £10
per referral. If the work takes longer than approximately 2 hours,
then we ask if you can make an additional voluntary donation if you
can afford it. The maximum amount of time we can allocate to a job
is 3 to 4 hours, as we normaly have a long waiting list for the
service. The handyperson will try to carry out as many jobs as he
can in that time, but he may need to make another referral for him
to revisit you.
If it's a very small job such as
changing light bulbs, then we won't charge you for the
referral.
Is there a waiting list?
We do normally have a waiting list, as
there are so many people contacting us to use the service. We try
to prioritise works according to how urgent they are and if someone
is at risk of falling or having an accident if its not done
quickly. Normally we aim to carry out urgent works within 2 weeks,
and other jobs as soon as possible after that.
