Energy Efficiency

Making your home warmer and reducing your household bills through practical measures

We work closely with the Energy Savings Trust Advice Centre to offer information, advice and financial assistance to help you improve the energy efficiency of your home, with the aim of:

  • Making homes warmer and healthier,
  • Reducing fuel poverty by reducing the amount you need to spend on fuel bills
  • Helping to combat climate change.

The Energy Savings Trust Advice Centre can offer you impartial advice, information about insulation installers working in the area, and details about grants and offers that you may be eligible for. Contact them on 0800 512 012.

There are many ways you can make your home more energy efficient. Below are some tips about saving energy:

  1. Insulate your home. Heat is lost through walls and roofs. Schemes are available to help you with the cost of loft insulation, cavity wall insulation, and even insulation for solid-walled properties.
  2. Turn your central heating thermostat down. Reducing your room temperature by 1degree Celsius could cut your heating bills by up to 10%.
  3. Close your curtains at dusk to stop heat escaping through the windows, and check for draughts around the windows and doors.
  4. Turn off the lights when you leave a room.
  5. Don't leave appliances on standby, and unplug chargers when not in use.
  6. When using the dishwasher or washing machine, use low temperatures and only wash full loads.
  7. Avoid using a tumble dryer - put clothes on the washing line where possible.
  8. Use energy saving light bulbs, available from most major supermarkets and DIY stores, among others.
  9. Only boil as much water in your kettle as you need (but remember to cover the elements of an electric kettle).
  10. When buying appliances, check the energy rating label - aim to buy appliances with as high a rating as possible.
