Family Centres

Social Services operates ten specialist family centres. Each provides a range of services to support children and families in a pleasant and stimulating setting.

What are our aims?

To provide services to help support children and to protect them from harm
To help children reach their potential
To prevent family breakdown
To minimise the effects of disability on children
To promote contact between children and their families in circumstances where children are unable to live at home

The main focus of the work of our family centres is in supporting families in caring for their children. Centre staff work in partnership with parents and other agencies in the community in order to safeguard children and to ensure that their physical, emotional and educational needs are met.

What services do Family Centres offer?

Our family centres differ in the range or services which they offer to their local communities. Services may be provided individually or within a group setting. A service may be delivered in the centre or an outreach service, depending on the needs of the family.

Here are some examples of services which may be available:

Parent’s groups
Children’s groups
Education provision for young parents
Child development/parentcraft sessions
After school activities
Holiday play schemes
Work with individual children, including assessment of their wishes and feelings
Individual work in the home
Family support sessions
Specialist assessment, life story work, and pre-placement preparation
Information about other local services

How do I get access to Family Centre Services?

Families normally access family centre services through the social work team which serves their district. For more information, contact your Social Care Team who will be able to discuss your needs and the kinds of services which you may need.
