Climate Change & Energy Conservation
Cheshire East Council has already signed up to the
“Nottingham
Declaration on Climate Change”, highlighting the Council’s
commitment to improving energy management.
Every local
authority in the country has been invited to sign the declaration
and by June 2006 over 200 councils had taken up the
challenge. The declaration is a voluntary pledge to address
the issues of climate change. It represents a statement of
commitment that any council can make to its own community. The
declaration was originally launched at a conference in Nottingham
with 200 leaders, chief executives and senior managers of UK local
government.
Cheshire East’s signing of the pledge continues the commitments
made by the former Borough Councils. Cabinet approved the signing
of the declaration and the Council will now identify ways of making
energy efficiency savings through for example, procurement, use of
alternative fuels, fleet management and staff travel, and in
working in partnership with the Community to reduce the Borough’s
carbon footprint.
Leader of the Council, Wesley Fitzgerald, commented, “We believe
in the Borough that we can make a significant contribution, through
careful examination of our activities we aim to reduce carbon
emissions. Hopefully this will encourage others in the
community to follow our lead.”
