Gill Jones HMI
Gill Jones HMI was born in Essex attending schools in
Thurrock. She left school for University to study music. Following
her degree, she spent a brief period accompanying singers,
violinists and ‘cellist’s (one of whom she later married). She
quickly realised that this career was not for her and trained to be
a teacher at Goldsmiths’ College, London.
Her teaching career began in primary schools in Essex. She moved
to Liverpool in the mid 1980s to be with her husband, continuing
her teaching career in Toxteth. Both her headships were in Wirral.
In 2002, she was invited by the National College of School
Leadership to mentor new headteachers and to lead training on the
New Visions, NPQH and SIP programmes. Following this, she worked
for Wirral Local Authority as a Senior School Improvement Officer,
working particularly closely with schools in Special
Measures.
In 2007 she was appointed as a member of Her Majesty's
Inspectorate. Since joining, she has led inspections of nursery,
primary and secondary schools, independent schools and children’s
centres nationally. She was a link
HMI
for Rochdale, Tameside and
Southend-on-Sea local authorities and was a member of the English
Survey Team. In 2010, she led the survey ‘Removing barriers to
literacy’. The evidence collected from this and other recent
Ofsted surveys, such as ‘Reading by Six’ and ‘Excellence in
English’, underpin the focus on literacy in the proposed new
framework for 2012. Earlier this year she was seconded to the
team responsible for the new school inspection framework to provide
literacy and primary expertise. Recently, she was appointed as
Principal Officer for Framework Development in Maintained Primary
Schools.
Gill spends much of her working week in London but really enjoys
her weekends when she returns to Wirral to catch up on family life.
She has two sons at secondary school who are experiencing the joys
of A’ levels and GCSEs.
Gill will introduce us to the new Ofsted Inspection
Framework and explain how governors will be judged within
the new leadership and management criterion.
