Aiming High for Disabled Children
Cheshire East has
been working with the support of the central government initiative
“Aiming High for Disabled Children” ( AHDC ) to help disabled
children, young people and their families to get the support and
chances they need to live ordinary lives. The government project
has now finished but Cheshire East continues to Aim High for
Disabled Children and is continuing with much of the work
established over the previous two years. In particular work
has focused on short break opportunities as families have described
these as their key priority.
Short breaks come in a variety of formats and
each one can last from just a few hours to a few days and
occasionally longer. They include day, evening, overnight and
weekend activities and can take place in a community setting, the
child's own home, the home of an approved carer or a residential
setting. They provide disabled children and young people with
enjoyable experiences away from their primary carers, thereby
contributing to their personal and social development and reducing
social isolation. They can also provide parents and families with a
necessary and valuable break from caring responsibilities.

High Team for more information.
