Language and Communication

Welcome to the pages that will help you to support and develop young children's communication and language.

We hope that the information on these pages will support you in creating stimulating environments where children can enjoy learning and experimenting with language; whether you are at home or in an early years setting.

Through everyday, fun activities and experiences that are based on children’s interests, you will be able to encourage early language development right from the start; extending children’s vocabulary and developing their understanding so they become confident and skilled communicators.

Please use the tabs on the left hand side to access information about:

  • Every Child a Talker (ECaT)
  • Top Tips for Talking
  • Hello, the National Year of Communication (2011) – themes, ideas and useful publications including information about ages and stages of communication
  • Ideas and activities to share with parents and carers
  • Communication friendly environments

On each of these pages there will be links to other useful websites and publications
