Cheshire East residents encouraged to butt out for No Smoking Day

6 March 2024

With No Smoking Day just around the corner on 13 March 2024, Cheshire East Council is encouraging residents to make the best possible choice for their health and to use the day as a great opportunity to quit smoking for good.

Now in its 40th year, No Smoking Day is a national campaign that encourages smokers to take a 24-hour break from cigarettes, highlighting the numerous benefits of quitting smoking, even for a short period.

Quitting smoking, even for one day, can significantly improve your health, including:

  • Increased lung function
  • Improved circulation
  • Boosted immune system
  • Enhanced sense of taste and smell

There are more than 5.3 million adults in England who still smoke, and smoking remains the single largest preventable cause of death in England. In fact, up to two in three smokers will die as a result of long-term smoking.

Matt Tyrer 223x280Dr Matt Tyrer, director of public health at Cheshire East Council, said: "Smoking is the leading cause of preventable death in the UK, and it's important to remember that the benefits of quitting smoking start immediately.

“No matter how long you've smoked, quitting can significantly improve your health and well-being."
