Bird enthusiasts flock to Queens Park in Crewe

Families are being offered the chance to build their own bird
boxes at Queens Park in Crewe on Valentine’s Day.
On Tuesday, February 14, Queens Park will be celebrating
National Nest Box Week and giving people the opportunity to build a
bird box and get advice on how to encourage birds to flock to the
garden.
The boxes attract a variety of birds including blue tits, great
tits, nuthatches and tree sparrows.
Councillor Rod Menlove, Cabinet member with responsibility for
environmental services, said: “This event is ideal for families and
is suitable for anyone over the age of six. It is sure to be a
useful and enjoyable event which is intended to raise greater
awareness of Britain’s wild birds and how they can be cared for in
the garden.”
Queens Park also supports bird-breeding programmes and its staff
soon hope to attract the spotted flycatcher bird, whose population
has halved since 1987, to the Victorian park.
The bird box-making session takes place between 2pm and 3pm.
Those interested in attending should meet at the ‘Pickle Jar at the
Lakeside’ pavilion within the park grounds by 2pm.
Places are limited, so to book a place, call Matthew Axford on
01625 383777. Children must be accompanied by an adult and a charge
of £2.50 per bird box is payable in advance of the event.
