Benefit fraud costs millions of pounds every
year.
We are committed to protecting public funds
through our action against benefit fraud, to make sure only those
entitled to the help receive it.
Every time a false or fraudulent claim is
made, it costs us all. Because of this we are getting tough
on benefit cheats! We have a dedicated and active team that is
responsible for the deterrence, detection, prevention and
investigation of fraudulent claims. We will prosecute benefit
cheats and recover any overpaid benefit. We are keen to
ensure that those who cheat the system will not be allowed to get
away with it.

How can I report Suspected Benefit Fraud?
If you know someone who may be cheating the
benefits system, please complete the online
form. Please be assured that we will not trace your identity
through submission of the online form.
Alternatively, you can ring the
confidential freephone Fraud Hotline on 0800 389
2787. You don’t have to give your name and your call
will be treated in the strictest confidence.
What types of fraud are there?
The following is a list of just some of the
types of benefit fraud:
- Partner not declared
- Working and not declared all or part of the wages or other
jobs
- Moved out of the property but still claiming benefit for
it
- Undeclared or under declared savings including other
property
- Pretending to have to pay rent
- Not declaring other people in the property
What do the investigators do?
- Investigate cases where information is provided or obtained
which suggests potential fraud
- Data match with other bodies in order to safeguard public
funds.
- Work closely with other organisations such as Department for
Work and Pensions Fraud Investigation Service.
- Prosecute Benefit Cheats in accordance with the Benefits
Prosecution Policy,read the latest reports.
