Housing Standards
Everyone should have the opportunity to live
in a decent home. The Private Sector Housing team's role is to
ensure that housing is safe to live in, and that owners carry out
their legal responsibilities to maintain the property.
Landlords
If you are a landlord, we can offer you advice and information
about your responsibilities as a landlord, including information
about gas safety, fire safety and energy performance certificates. We will be
developing a range of fact sheets about home repairs, which we will
add to this website as they become available.
Tenants
If you rent your home from a private landlord and you are
unhappy with the state of the property, the Private Sector
Housing team can offer:
- advice about how to resolve the issues with your landlord
- a home visit to carry out an inspection and rate any hazards
using the Housing Health and Safety Rating System
- liaison with your landlord to get the repairs carried out
- enforcement action to get the repairs carried out under the
Housing Act 2004.
Before you request a visit we expect you to have already
contacted your landlord (or their agent) to report the repairs and
given them opportunity to put things right. If you are not
satisfied with their response and you would like an officer to
visit to carry out an inspection, please complete the Property
Inspection - Rented Properties form (PDF,
100KB) and return it to us at the address on the
form.
More information about getting repairs carried out to your
property is available on the
Shelter website.
