Frequently Asked Questions - Dog Wardens

The following is a list of frequently asked questions related to dog wardens:

I have lost my Dog. What can i do?

Contact us with details and we will make every effort to re-unite you with your Dog. (Please note that there is a fee of £40 for a returned Dog or £80 for any Dog taken to the Kennels)

The dog next door is always barking. What can i do?

Barkings dogs are dealt with by the Environmental Health department, you should contact the Environmental Health team.

Does my dog require identification?

Your dog must wear a collar and tag by law when out in a public place, which includes contact details of the owner. This information will assist in the dog being re-united with its owner.

If we seize a stray dog, and we can't trace an owner, we will keep it in boarding kennels for a period of 7 days, then if not claimed, efforts will be made to rehome if not claimed.

Does my dog need to be licensed?

No. However, it is advisable to have your dog micro-chipped so it can be easily identified in addition to wearing a collar and tag.

Does the council offer a micro-chipping service?

No, however a local vet can micro-chip your Dog for a nominal fee.

What is the councils stance on dog fouling?

The Dog (fouling of land) Act 1996 was adopted and means that:

It is illegal to fail to clear up after your dog if it fouls on any land which is open to the air and to which the public has access.

The penaly for contravening the act is a £50 fixed penalty fine. If the fine is not paid within 14 days, then this may lead to prosecution in a magistrates court with a maximum fine of a £1000.

Patrols are carried out in areas that are regulary fouled.

My neighbour doesn't clean up after their dog and has fouled their garden, it is causing a smell and attracting flies. What can i do?

Contact the Environmental Health team.

We would like a dog-waste bin in our area. What can we do?

We always welcome suggestions from the public on a new location of a dog waste bin.

Please contact the dog warden who will then survey the area and contact the relevant department.

What should i do about dangerous dogs?

Cheshire Police deal with dog attacks on people and on other animals. They can be contacted on 08454580000

It is also advisable to contact your doctor or NHS direct if you have been bitten.

Does my Dog have to wear a muzzle?

If you know that your Dog may try to bite people or other animals when in public, it would be sensible for it to wear a muzzle.

The magistrate’s court can order that a Dog be muzzled if it considers that it has been out of control or has acted dangerously.

Please note that a dog should never be left alone whilst wearing a muzzle.

Are there any Dog breeds that are banned in the UK?

Four breeds are banned under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991, they are:
