Coppenhall Cemetery
Our records for this cemetery can be traced back to 1863,
however there are graves older than this, the records for which can
be found at Chester. The site consists of 9.44
acres. Coppenhall Cemetery was originally designed for the
villagers of Monks Coppenhall; this being the village Crewe grew up
around in the late 1940s.
Among the graves in this cemetery lie that of twin brothers, who
were responsible for changing the course of naval policy. Both
brothers joined the Royal Navy during the 1st World War
and were assigned to the same ship. Unfortunately the ship
sank, killing the twins together with many other young men from
Crewe and the surrounding area. The death of the two brothers led
to the Royal Navy prohibiting relatives of immediate family from
serving on the same vessel.
