Knock Knock 4CE
Educational Presentation to Year 6 Students by
Cheshire East Consumer Protection and Investigations Team
Cheshire East Councils Consumer Protection &
Investigations Team (Trading Standards) are currently offering an
educational presentation to year 6 students on the topics of
Doorstep Crime and Consumer Education. The department is also able
to provide an educational website to help raise awareness of
‘safety at the door’ to prevent doorstep crime and bogus
callers.
The campaign is aimed at Primary School Children
(target group year 6) within Cheshire East who can then pass on
their education and knowledge to others including parents,
grandparents, carers and elderly neighbours.
This website has been developed to provide
resources for children, parents and teachers to learn about
doorstep safety together. The lesson plan and activities were
originally designed for use with year 6 primary school
children.
Consumer rights, advice and education are also a
vitally important issue for everyone everyday. The campaign also
includes education directed at year 6 students as they become aware
of making purchases of not only goods and services, either within a
retail premise or the internet and how the rules and regulations
apply and what to do if things go wrong.
As part of the campaign we will:
- Conduct an initial meeting with the school to
discuss the needs of the students in relation to the above
topics.
- Two officers will then attend the school at a mutually
convenient time:
- One officer will undertake a 55 minute lesson on doorstep crime
and bogus callers at the door using the interactive ‘knock knock
who’s there website’ aimed for year 6 students.
- Another officer will then undertake a 30 minute presentation on
consumer rights when purchasing goods and services aimed for year 6
students.
- Following the lessons the students at leisure can
design/draw/paint a landscape A4 poster showing a message learnt
from either the doorstep crime or consumer rights presentation.
These posters can then submitted to our department (name of student
and school details on the reverse) before the end of June that year
whereby they will be judged by other members of our department and
councillors at the beginning of July.
- The top 6 entries selected from each category will then be
placed onto a calendar for the following year.
- Each of the 12 winners will receive a calendar before the
Christmas break with the intention for the pupils to pass the
calendars to an elderly resident or relative as a Christmas
present. We will also provide each class who participates in the
competition with a calendar.
The education fits within Key Stage 2 of the
curriculum, in particular with the Citizenship / Personal, Social
and Health / Art and ICT subjects.
Sandbach, Alsager and Knutsford will be the first
area’s to be offered the project in 2011 and we will then be
looking to role the project out across Cheshire East in the coming
years. If your school is based within the above areas the lesson
would need to be arranged before the end of May 2010.
If you are interested in your school becoming
involved with this project in the future please contact the
Consumer Protection and Investigations Team on 01270
685900.
