New Regulations

These regulations apply to businesses using 'doorstep' and 'face to face' sales method.

What are the regulations?

The Cancellation of Contracts Made in a Consumer’s Home or Place of Work etc Regulations 2008.

They introduce cooling-off periods and cancellation rights that consumers have when contracts are made during solicited and unsolicited visits by traders. They will give consumers greater rights in areas where they might be most vulnerable and create a level playing field for honest business.

When do they come into force?

1st October 2008.

Will it change how I do business?

You will be required to give the consumer a written notice of their right to cancel, it must be prominently displayed in the same document, where the contract is completed wholly or partly in writing. Set the cooling off period at 7 calendar days (some businesses already offer a longer cooling off period for customers) you MUST do this whether you COLD CALL or not.

How do I find out if they will affect my business?

You can find guidance on the Regulations on the Office of Fair Trading website, or you can contact the Business Support Team for advice on 01270 685900.

Where can I get further information?

Further information about the regulations and the government consultation can be found on the Department for Business website.
