Proof of Age
There is a wide range of legislation that prohibits the supply
(sale or hire) of specific products to persons under certain
ages. As a trader, you and your staff can be prosecuted for
selling age restricted products to anyone who is under-age. Your
members of staff need to be advised that they may be personally
liable if they sell age restricted products to young persons in
breach of the legal requirements.
If there is any doubt about a person's
age, proof of age should be requested. Acceptable types of
proof of age must contain a photograph of the holder and their date
of birth. This could be a passport, photo driving licence, or other
photo proof of age, such as Citizen Card or Validate card. If there
is still doubt, the sale should be refused.
Trading Standards supports the
Challenge 25 scheme.
