Driver Licence Hackney Carriages and
Private Hire Vehicles
Cheshire East Council issues a combined licence enabling drivers
to drive both Hackney Carriage and Private Hire Vehicles. A licence
lasts for 3 years. It is the Council's duty to ensure that
all licensed drivers are suitable for the purpose so criminal
record checks and medical checks are requested for each
applicant. Applicants are also required to pass a knowledge
test.
How Do I Apply?
To become a Joint Driver you will need to:
- complete a Cheshire East Joint Driver application
form
- pass a group II medical by your own
doctor. This must be completed on a Cheshire East medical form
only. Other medical forms cannot be accepted
- complete a Standard Criminal Records Check form
- provide two colour passport sized photographs
- pass a theory test that consists of a knowledge test of the
Cheshire East area and questions in relation to the Highway Code
and Driver Conditions
Applicants must have held a driving licence granted under Part
III of the Road Traffic Act 1988 for a period of 12 months or more
(this includes UK and EEA licences)
In order to complete you Criminal Records form you must
establish how many forms of identification you need to produce.

Once you have established which forms of ID you require you must
bring them to your local one-stop-shop, along with the completed
Cheshire East application form and photographs. If you have not had
your medical form completed by your doctor at this stage it can be
handed in at a later date. It must be handed in to the same
one-stop-shop where you made your original application.
