Visitor Economy

The Visitor Economy in Cheshire East is worth £895m per annum and the region welcomes over 16 million visitors each year, supporting nearly 11,500 jobs.

Cheshire East Council are aiming to develop a visitor economy with a value of £1 billion by 2020 with the current value to Cheshire East growing by 6.3% in 2016 to £895 million. This was fuelled by a record 15.98 million visitors which is up 4.9% in 2016; boosted by the likes of the Tour of Britain and the Rewind Festival. 

Total employment supported by Cheshire East’s visitor economy has also showed an increase; up 3.5% in 2016 to 11,493  FTE

Crucially for the borough, the number of staying visitors has increased by 2% to 1.5 million with an economic impact up 5.5% in 2016 to £229 million.

The Visitor Economy Team

Cheshire East Council has a dedicated Visitor Economy team, a small team who are responsible for the promotion of Cheshire East as a vibrant, exciting visitor destination. The team support the development of tourism infrastructure across the region to increase visitor figures and enhance the visitor experience.

On a practical level, the team work closely with visitor attractions, events, town councils and retailers to promote their visitor offer. The team work closely with Marketing Cheshire, the regional tourist board to manage PR campaigns to promote the area on a local and national scale, and deliver projects to improve the visitor experience in Cheshire East.

The team are responsible for the management of Macclesfield and Congleton Visitor Information Centres, and the provision of visitor information across the borough.
